Dr. Andrew D. Friend

Dr. Andrew D. Friend is a Co-I and is responsible for physiologically based forest dynamics modeling through his HYBRID models. Dr. Friend is PI on a major UK-funded project in the NERC TIGER (Terrestrial Initiative in Global Environmental Research) program. While on a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Virginia, he developed a unique detailed mechanistic approach to modeling the fluxes of carbon and water between a forested land surface and the atmosphere, represented in the HYBRID model. He is also working with GCM modellers to improve the representation of land surface processes in GCMs. Work with HYBRID in the FED project will emphasize dynamics of mixed species stands, as are common at the NEF.
